Doing things as it happens with the SF Department of Public Workers:

Following up report on the Sidewalk Utility Telephone box lid defect:

Here is what I had done if I was the DPW Secretary or the Pacbell construction crew.
After receiving the phone call complaint on 11.19.03, I would had located the mentioned lid on the engineers map and after that I would had call the construction sign street truck men and asked him to secure the site. I would had done that just in respect for the neighbors. Of course, you must at least had gone to high school and know where is the South of Taylor and East side of the Union Street corner. Then I would had called Pacbell and report the complaint over to them and requested the lid to be fixed ASAP. To make them responsible and act on time I would put a system of: "If you do not do your work on a time manner, you would be considerate negligent and you would have to suffer a penalty for your negligence". In my opinion you should be transferred and work in other areas where responsibility is not really a required element. There we have, nothing complicated, just plain and simple common sense work. Now, let's just imagine if we were a Pacbell construction crew responsible to fix those things. As an engineer, I would go around and observe the sidewalk cable lids and I would try to construct a similar lid for the Pacbell sidewalk. The cable lids are far superior constructed in design and security than the Pacbell sidewalk lids and they do not make any noise when people step on top of it.

And That is the End of it!
